DANCELINES in Research in Dance Education journal

Some of you may have noticed that Dancelines, a journal set up by the National Resource Centre for Dance at the University of Surrey, to publish good student writing, has recently been incorporated as a section within the journal, Research in Dance Education, published by Taylor and Francis. I have taken over from Judith Chapman as editor of this section of the journal. Those of us on the Dancelines Editorial Board are excited by this move which gives Dancelines a secure home whilst also extending its potential readership considerably both nationally and internationally.

It is planned to include a Dancelines section containing one or two articles in the journal in one issue per year. The Dancelines Editorial Board wishes to continue the practice whereby HE tutors recommend papers that they think might be worthy of publication and encourage those students concerned to submit them using the journal's guidelines(attached with a student details sheet). We are deliberately not publishing the guidelines in the journal because we wish to avoid students themselves sending in work they think might be worthy of publication.

Can I therefore ask you all to inform other staff of this initiative, and to look out for good student writing and encourage students to submit work to us if you think it might be worthy of publication. This most probably means that students need to make any corrections or amendments indicated by markers before submission. We welcome undergraduate as well as postgraduate work normally between 3000 and 6000 words long - the key criterion being that the work is publishable in an academic journal. We are urgently seeking copy now for the next issue of the journal due for publication in early 2007.

Submissions should be sent to me at the address below:

SCODHE Conference 2005

The Standing Conference On Dance In Higher Education (SCODHE) and
SCUDD (Standing Conference of University Drama Departments) will be holding their second affiliate conference on 18-20 March 2005 at University College Northampton. Once again the journal Research in Dance Education is collaborating with SCODHE in the call for papers, and we welcome contributions from international researchers.

The theme to this years SCODHE Conference will be the life and legacy of Robert Cohan.  Cohan, one of the seminal figures in the development of dance in Britain, celebrates his 80th birthday next year.  We would welcome papers and presentations on any aspect of his work; in the USA with Graham, the foundation of The Place and London Contemporary Dance Theatre, the choreography, including reconstructions and preservation politics, his impact on dance in Israel etc.  On a wider stage we welcome contributions looking at his legacy, this could include papers or practical presentations on the work of the many choreographers and companies who emerged from The Place under his direction.

The conference also welcomes papers on other topics that would come under the wider umbrella of SCODHE’s concern for dance in education. SCODHE and the Editor of Research in Dance Education would particularly like to explore the following themes:

  • New Technology in Dance Teaching and Learning
  • Dance and Related Arts
  • Philosophy in Dance Education
  • Collaborative Dance projects
  • Cultural, Intercultural and Multicultural Issues in Dance Education
  • Creativity in Dance, such as, Teaching Creatively, Teaching for Creativity and Creative Learning
  • Arts funding for Dance and its impact on practice

Papers should be no more than 20 minutes and practical sessions no more then 120 minutes.  Proposals should be no longer than two pages of A4 and should clearly outline the topic, development of the presentation and conclusions, and give indication of the type and amount of illustrative material, if used.  Please send proposals for consideration to:

ELIA/SCODHE Joint Seminar

This will be the first joint meeting of SCODHE and the Dance Section from ELIA (European League of Institutes of the Arts).  The Dance Section is one of the most active parts of ELIA with members from dance institutions in all parts of Europe.  The morning will provide an excellent opportunity to meet with European colleagues and to share experiences and ideas for the development of dance post Bologna.

After lunch we will be joined by Jeanette Siddall, Director of Dance at Arts Council England who will lead a discussion focussing on trends and opportunities for working in dance.  These will include; dance performance, choreographic work, recruiting and retaining dance managers, positive developments in the value, relevance and recognition of the contribution of dance to the wider social agenda, research / debate to underpin and push forward practice, how we encourage / equip others to succeed. This is an opportunity for SCODHE members to share our thoughts on the future growth and sustainability of dance.

In the evening there will be a performance of new choreographic work by Winchester staff; Debbie Lee- Anthony, Suna Imre, David McCormick, Cathy Seago and Dancers.

The meeting is free to members of SCODHE, and will take place @

University College, Winchester, Saturday, February 5th, 10.30am-5pm.
